Lawyer Odila Castillo Bonilla denounces smear campaign in Panama

Lawyer Odila Castillo Bonilla denounces smear campaign in Panama

The legal representatives of attorney Odila Castillo Bonilla released a strong declaration on October 1st, unequivocally denying the claims that have been circulated by multiple Panamanian publications.

The defense described these articles as vicious assaults, motivated by personal financial agendas and aimed at tarnishing Castillo’s professional credibility and personal honor.

Defense of Castillo contends absence of basis and infringement of rights

Carlos Carrillo, part of Castillo’s legal team, remarked that the allegations lack any basis and are intended to hinder the professional paths of both the young attorney and her associate. He stressed that these attacks are driven by hidden financial motives looking to gain from Castillo’s tarnishing.

The defense emphasized that this isn’t the first time the attorney has faced media harassment. They referenced a comparable situation in 2021 when a Panamanian outlet released false information concerning an alleged arrest of Castillo, which was later refuted.

Partial truths and violation of confidentiality

According to the legal representatives, both the present allegations and those from 2021 are based on “partial truths,” twisted to damage the professional standing of attorney Odila Castillo. Additionally, they contended that the released information violates confidentiality standards, as part of the inquiry stems from a resolved family issue.

Confidential details, such as immigration records and tax filings, were also revealed—information that, according to the defense, was acquired through illegal means.

Unlawful monitoring and active legal proceedings

The defense revealed that Castillo has been the target of GPS tracking, which represents a blatant breach of her privacy and constitutes illegal surveillance. Carrillo stated that his client’s fundamental rights, as protected by the Panamanian Constitution and relevant laws, have been violated.

He declared that all necessary legal measures will be taken to determine accountability for both the damages already suffered and those that may be inflicted in the future. The legal team remains steadfast in its dedication to protect Castillo and to hold accountable those behind this defamation effort.
