In two regattas, crew takes home the medals

The Conestoga Crew team rowed in their first away regatta on Friday and Saturday at the ISC sprints in Mercer Lake, New Jersey.

Conestoga rowers won four gold metals. In the novice quad, Rory McCue, Nicole DeStefano, Ali Siegele and Maggie Dwyer won the first gold metals of the day. Novice quad Mike Tucker, Kevin Haddad, Blake DeVlieger and Nick Nalbone also won gold, pulling away from the lead boat in the last 500 meters of the race. 

 

Also winning gold, JV quad Marissa Caldwell, Augusta Harris, Katy Kiely and Elizabeth Moran swept away the field. Junior Matthew Needles and sophomores Jack Wright, Jack Hoban and Tim Hersh won a gold metals by an stunning 17 seconds in the JV quad heat. They also participated in the varsity quad event.

 

The Conestoga rowers also won three silver metals. Sabrina Luthra and Kelcey Hadden-Leggett achieved silver in the JV double event, off the lead boat by a mere 0.69 seconds. Drew Bailey and Max Frey also won gold in the JV double event. After winning their qualifying race in the morning, varsity quad Emily Apathy, Caroline Fregeau, Megan Connell and Emily Lavender took silver in their final.

 

Conestoga achieved four bronze metals as well. Junior Liz Dunkel and senior Shelby Johantgen competed in the varsity doubles race, winning bronze, off the gold by only three seconds. Sam Hudson, Mike DiLucca, Stetson Miller and Ricky Groves won bronze in the novice quad event. The men’s varsity quad, rowed by Matt Needles, Jack Wright, Mike McCarter and Tim Hersh, won bronze in their heat. Matthew Ikeler, Christopher Connell, Max Frey and Michael Noone won bronze in the JV quad event. .

 

Junior Alex DeLuccia and senior Mike McCarter participated in the highly competitive varsity double event. JV quad Priyanka Kapadia, Grace Kerschensteiner, Sherean Ali and Sara Rudman also competed in a tight heat.

 

On Sunday, the crew team came home after a hard day of racing to compete again their home turf: the Schuylkill River.

 

Duncan McNabb and Drew Bailey competed in the JV double event. Novice quad Mike Tucker, Kevin Haddad, Blake DeVlieger and Nick Nalbone won second place, off the lead boat by 0.46 seconds. Sam Hudson, Mike DiLucca, Stetson Miller and Ricky Groves won third in the freshman quad event.

 

Alex DeLuccia and Mike McCarter participated in the strong, varsity double event. For the second day, Matt Needles, Jack Wright, Jack Hoban and Tim Hersh won the JV quad race. Matthew Ikeler, Christopher Connell, Max Frey and Michael Noone also participated in the challenging event. Sabrina Luthra and Kelcey Hadden-Leggett competed in the challenging JV double race. JV quad Marissa Caldwell, Augusta Harris, Katy Kiely and Elizabeth Moran won second in their event with Priyanka Kapadia, Grace Kerschensteiner, Sherean Ali and Sara Rudman also in their race.

 

Freshmen Rory McCue, Nicole DeStefano, Ali Siegele and sophomore Maggie Dwyer achieved third place in the novice quad event. In the lightweight varsity double, Liz Dunkel and Shelby Johantgen won second, off the leaders by only three seconds. Varsity quad Emily Apathy, Caroline Fregeau, Megan Connell and Emily Lavender also won second in their event.

 

Through the series of victories attained in the past weeks, the girls of the Conestoga Crew Team have won the esteemed Manny Flick Points Trophy. The team moves on to another away regatta in New Jersey’s Cooper River next week.
