Best Buddies hold soccer game

Members of the Best Buddies club participated in a soccer game with players from the boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams on Nov. 21 on Teamer Field. Each varsity soccer team’s participants were split into 2 groups, and the members of Best Buddies that played were distributed between the groups, which ended up tying 9-9 for the victory.
In addition to students who attended to cheer their peers on, several members of the cheerleading squad helped motivate the teams, and a group of marching band participants served as background music when one of the teams scored.
“We thought it would be a fun event for [the Best Buddies members] and be a good experience for everybody,” Best Buddies advisor Regina Long said. “They get to be the stars of the game, [and] this is their chance to play in a sports game.”
Sophomore Jessica Yang, a member of Best Buddies who came out to support her fellow clubmates, said that she thinks the participants greatly benefitted from the event.
“I think that they’re having fun because people all want to play with them,” Yang said. “They can experience teamwork and sportsmanship, and they can play sports and have fun.”
Junior Brittany Bowers, a member of the girls’ soccer team who played in the game, thinks that all those who participated enjoyed getting a chance to play a friendly game of soccer.
“I think they loved it because it gets them excited and now they can play and interact and have a lot of fun after school,” Bowers said.
