A New Eagle Elementary School custodian was arrested last week and charged with robbing two banks in Easttown Township, the police said today.
Marcellus Oliphant, 40, is charged with the armed robbery of the Berwyn branch of the Malvern Federal Saving Bank in April 2005 and the Devon branch of the Wachovia Bank in February 2008. He is a New Eagle second shift custodian, Superintendent Dan Waters said in a statement.
Upon notification from the police, Oliphant was “suspended without pay and permanently removed from assignment in the District,” the statement said.
He was arrested at the school on Feb. 3.
Investigators from the Easttown Police, FBI and the Chester County District Attorney’s office also arrested three other men in connection with the robberies.
Oliphant was sent to Delaware County Prison in lieu of bail.
A state criminal background check was performed before Oliphant’s hiring, Waters said.
