Spoke staff earns national awards, recognition
It’s been a summer of national awards and recognition for The Spoke.
In early August, the National Scholastic Press Association awarded the newspaper with a First Class ranking, citing its treatment of sensitive topics and its overall layout and design as strong points. The Spoke is also a finalist for the NSPA Pacemaker Award, the highest honor the organization gives to individual publications.
More recently, Philadelphia Magazine named The Spoke the “best student newspaper” in the area. The editors and researchers for the publication had this to say about The Spoke: “Nationally recognized and award-winning, Conestoga’s seasoned journalists learn to tackle serious topics—growing up gay, teen pregnancy, swine flu, illegal gambling—for their published-seven-times-a-year paper and even richer, ever-updating Web site, Stoganews.com.”
Current editor-in-chief Seth Zweifler is a finalist in two categories for the 2009 NSPA Story of the Year; former editor-in-chief Henry Rome is also a finalist in two categories for the same award. Junior Gabriela Epstein is one of three students in the country who is nominated for the 2009 NSPA Cartoon of the Year award. In addition, co-adviser Susan Houseman was named a Special Recognition Adviser by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund.

District says school closure for swine flu unlikely
According to school nurse Dawn Zrebiec, there are currently three confirmed cases and multiple suspected cases of the swine flu virus at Conestoga. Principal Amy Meisinger said that a school closure due to an outbreak of the virus is unlikely. To prevent the spread of swine flu, students should wash their hands, cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing, stay home for 24 hours when sick and stay away from other sick individuals. The district has yet to decide whether vaccinations will be mandated throughout the school.

Repeated server crashes cause inconvenience
Recent computer server crashes in the district have complicated student and faculty access to electronic files and grading programs. Robin McConnell, director of assessment, accountability and technology for T/E, said the district is looking to implement a plan that will improve the reliability of servers.
