Spoke receives awards and recognition

Posted on 05 September 2009 by newsdesk

It’s been a summer of national awards and recognition for The Spoke, Conestoga High School’s student newspaper.

In early August, the National Scholastic Press Association awarded The Spoke with a First Class status, citing the newspaper’s treatment of in-depth stories and its overall layout and design as strong points. In addition, in its first year for Web site critiques, the NSPA also awarded Stoganews.com with a First Class ranking. The judge cited the following as strengths for the Web site: coverage and content, ability to foster dialogue with readers and visual appeal.

More recently, Philadelphia Magazine named The Spoke the “best student newspaper” in the area in its back-to-school issue. The editors and researchers for the publication had this to say about The Spoke: “Nationally recognized and award-winning, Conestoga’s seasoned journalists learn to tackle serious topics—growing up gay, teen pregnancy, swine flu, illegal gambling—for their published-seven-times-a-year paper and even richer, ever-updating Web site, Stoganews.com.”

Finally, even more recently, The Spoke received a Gold Medal award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The newspaper received All-Columbian Honors in all four available categories, including Coverage, Writing and Editing, Graphic Presentation and Business. This special merit puts The Spoke in the 95th percentile or higher in each of the four categories.
