On how they chose their group name:
Alec: “Our name was a group effort. We were thinking of familiar people that the whole school could easily identify with. Contrary to popular belief, however, the ‘TimmyD’ in our name doesn’t refer to [former Conestoga principal] Tim Donovan. We do reference [Donovan] in the name, but he is actually just the ‘mysterious stranger.’”
On their first performance as a group:
CJ: “Our first show was Jamnesty at school during our freshman year. Before that, we’d all done a lot with music, but nothing like this. With our performances, we’ve always kept it fairly casual.”
On how they choose cover material:
David: “It’s usually pretty random when we pick a song to play. Most often, we normally hear something we like and then go with it. There are a lot of bands out there to choose from.”
Eric: “Also, most of us will usually put in our own input on popular songs to make it our own. Overall, when we get together to learn new material, it’s a pretty laid back atmosphere.”
On their musical genre:
CJ: “I’d say we’re a ‘classical funk’ group—sort of a mix between Herbie Hancock and Mozart.”
On how they interact with the crowd:
Alec: “We’re performers, not entertainers. That being said, we’re mostly playing for our enjoyment, not necessarily to please the audience.”
On their largest performance yet:
David: “We opened for the band ‘Reilly’ at the Church of the Savior in Wayne last month. That was really the only time we’ve played somewhere people have to pay to get in.”
On the role of music in their future:
Eric: “For me personally, music will always be part of my life, but not the center of it. It’s a really good hobby to have, and it’s one that I’ll have forever. Will I make a career out of it? Most likely not. But the bottom line is it’s fun, and that’s why I do it. That’s really why we’re all here.”
Advice to offer for students looking to start their own band:
CJ: “Just have fun with it. Also, be realistic—the chances of you making it professionally aren’t that great, so enjoy what you’re doing in the here and now.”
Eric: “Don’t be in it for the fame, money or girls—do it for the love of the game.”
Alec: “Practice.”
