After losing a number of key players to graduation, the football team has had a rocky season so far, going 3-3 overall and 3-2 in the Central League.
’Stoga started off the year questionably after the team lost its first game to Owen J. Roberts by a score of 13-3. It was the first game for many players, and the team said it found it challenging to get a rhythm going.
“For a lot of players, this was our first time playing together,” senior captain Tim Parent said. “But we have a lot of talent on this team.”
The next game against Upper Darby was more exciting, as the team sloshed its way through the rain to go home with a shutout victory, 17-0.
With momentum whirring, the team took on Garnet Valley with a distinct goal in mind: to reclaim their dignity after an embarrassing defeat last season.
“Coach Vogan took us to the field and showed us [where Garnet Valley] humiliated us last year,” Parent said. “We had to take our pride back.”
Throughout the game, junior Billy Flatley made excellent connections with juniors Rasheed Williams and Dexter Bride. In the end, ’Stoga prevailed, 14-7.
However, the team’s luck ran out in a tough 34-30 loss to Marple Newtown, who got off to an early lead. They did manage to rebound nicely with a 37-0 win against Radnor in their first home game of the season, but suffered a 35-13 loss at the hands of Ridley in their most recent game.
But regardless of the score, ’Stoga can always be counted on to play tough.
“We always play like we’re going to win,” coach John Vogan said.
