Mishaps and muddles abound on the Schuylkill

Posted on 25 March 2010 by newsdesk

By Emily Seeburger, Staff Reporter

“It’s a nice day for rowing,” says crew head coach Paul Coomes as the sun starts to sink below the tree line after a grueling Sunday practice on the Schuylkill River. In that first week of March, the temperatures soared above 60 degrees and the sun blazed over the sidewalks of Boathouse Row, busy with runners and bikers alike, out enjoying the fresh air.

For Conestoga crew, weather like this is a welcome, although rare, occasion. Throughout the early season, which starts in January, the temperature often fluctuates between the thirties and forties, while the water chills to around a frosty 45 degrees.

For crew, the water is a home away from home. On the water, things can happen. Like winning races. Like beating records. And things like falling in. Or like getting so cold that one imagines different severities of frostbite, and every other kind of mishap possible on a frigid river.

“It’s always funny when you hear someone yell ‘crap!’ because you always know what’s going to happen,” junior Blake DeVlieger said. “Their boat is going to flip, you laugh and then you think ‘thank goodness it’s not me’.”

After falling victim to boat flips, rowers have to row off the river, change into dry clothes and then row back out, DeVlieger said. And more often than not, the crew has its oars to blame for the capsizing incidents.

“We were rowing and we were trying to turn the boat around going kind of fast. Then, my friend caught a crab [with her oar] and her arm went in the water,” sophomore Nicole DeStefano said. “It went downhill from there, and we ended up flipping over and getting all wet. It was one of the first flips of the season.”

Certain spots on the river can also be particularly prone to boat flips, such as the area under a bridge, where ripping currents can be especially dangerous on rough days.

“One time, I was bowing (controlling the boat) and I got distracted for a second. The next thing I knew, my oars were wedged between the Strawberry Mansion Bridge in the bottom of the support, and our boat started filling with water,” DeVlieger said. “Although our boat didn’t flip, we had to jump in to get our boat right.”

But surprisingly, not all accidents happen on the water.

“It’s kind of embarrassing, but I was walking backwards on the dock and I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going and just walked right into the freezing cold water,” junior Emily Apathy said. “I fell in and sprang back out just through natural instinct. It wasn’t terribly freezing, but cold enough that I never wanted to go in the water again.”

Before practice begins at 5 p.m., there is always someone telling a story about sliding uncontrollably across a dock or getting pushed into the river by a few conspiring teammates.

All of these antics make the team grow closer, which many members attribute to its success on the water.

This season, crew is looking forward to the U.S. Rowing Youth Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio. Last year, the varsity quad took tenth place, and the girls’ lightweight double, with junior Emily Apathy and senior Liz Dunkel, took twelfth. Apathy said that they are looking forward to another successful season, and that she anticipates placing even higher at Nationals in June.
